Following receipt of a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, Richard worked with airborne electronics in the United States Air Force, after which he worked for Melpar Inc., a division of Westinghouse Air Brake, in the design and construction of electronic flight simulators for the Air Force, Army, and Navy.
While attending night law school in Washington DC. he worked in the United States Patent Office as a patent examiner in the color television division, examining patent applications from RCA, Zenith, Sony and other significant companies.
In the practice of law, Richard has specialized in acquiring domestic and foreign patents and trademark registrations for individuals and companies of all sizes, including Beechcraft Aircraft (aircraft components), Emerson Process Management (industrial process flow meters), VoidForm Products (void forms for the concrete industry), Dynamic Materials Corp. (explosive welding products and processes), V-Formation, Inc. (roller skates), and Sporn Pet Products (pet products). He has also acquired patents for medical devices, archery bows, highway bridges, optical systems, wind turbines, and a wide variety of other devices for small companies and individuals.
In addition to extensive patent prosecution experience, Richard is a certified Civil Trial Advocate. He has represented clients in appeals in Federal Courts of Appeal and litigation in numerous Federal District Courts in matters involving patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret infringement.
